- Ductility capacity is a very important design parameter for estimation of the seismic behavior of structures in performance-based seismic design. The axial compression ratio and the transverse reinforcement ratio are two significant factors related to the ductility of compression-bending components. In this paper, a new type of piecewise confinement stirrup is employed to improve the ductility of cross section in the potential plastic hinge zone of high performance concrete shear wall. According to the connections between the structural performance levels and ductility demand, the relationship among the allowable value of axial compression ratio of high performance concrete shear wall, the quantities of confining stirrup, displacement ductility demand and performance levels are investigated. Based on the experimental research and computational analysis, the determination principle for the axial compression ratio limit of high performance concrete shear wall is presented in performance-based seismic design, and some useful advise of the axial compression ratio limit for designers are proposed.
