Abstract:

Northwest China is a wide scope with arid-cold climate and poor ecological environment. At the same time, a great part of rural poverty population all over the country lives in this area. Environmental degradation and economic poverty coexist there and have led to a vicious circle terribly. Every year peasants cut down many trees for heating but fail to achieve a good thermal condition because of poor design of the houses. To avoid following the old disastrous road of urban development with high consumption and high pollution, appropriate strategies in the arid cold climate should be studied for the sustainable development in rural undeveloped areas Northwest China. Passive technologies are applied to the houses in a village near Yinchuan (a typical city of Northwest China) as an exemplary project. Firstly, all houses are designed according to the principles of passive solar heating. Secondly, optimized biomass energy technologies such as biogas pit and straw gasification stove are utilized for cooking or heating. Last but not the least important, the ecological building materials such as earth, straw bale, fly ash are used to constructed houses which improves the indoor thermal comfort and meanwhile lowers the negative impact to the environment. Low costs, easy accessibility and habitants’ inclination are taken into account in the process of design.
