Abstract:

Vernacular earth houses is a cultural identity of Turpan, Xinjiang, and also a long-term adaptation to local extreme climate. However, they are facing with a crisis of decline due to their own defects along with strong impacts from modern architecture. The Comfortable Housing Project of Turpan seeks for a new-type earth construction method by combining vernacular wisdom with modern mechanised techniques. The house design learns from vernacular bioclimatic strategies such as multiple climatic buffers, huge thermal mass, semi-basement rooms and so on. To conquer problems of weak seismic performance and intensive labor input of traditional earth masonry, it also employs an alternative method of infilling compressed earth blocks (CEB) to a frame structure of reinforced concrete.
