Abstract:

Since the 1980s, Xi’an cities have experienced intense growth because of the country’s urbanization and modernization. With the corresponding, villages classified as urban areas by planning have only one ending: disappear or waiting for disappear. The lack of differential treatment and planning are difficulties faced by most villages. Therefore, understanding the development of these factors in the urban-village areas is essential. This case study was conducted in Xi’an Metropolis with the following goals: (1) understand the process of villages disappeared, and (2) analyze types, spatial distribution and built-up area density of villages that would contribute to an ordered urban-rural development. The results of this study show the following: (1) villages classified as urban by planning are not must be disappeared as a whole, (2) instead of general recognition, village built-up area density should be measured in a district, but not in a single village, and (3) village built-up area density of three districts should be different because of the various kinds of relationship between village and city.
