Ecological Matrix and Urbanization Mode: Investigation of three typical small watershed settlements units in the region of the Loess Plateau

• Abstract:In the ravine and the flatland area of the region of the Loess Plateau, the land form and ecological matrix identities could be presented by the regular repetition small watershed land-space units, the form and the distribution of the human settlements show their distinguished dependence on it as three typical styles: the Mountain Twig Style, the Corridor Valley Style and the Flatlands island Style. These units and their landscape pattern are the container and medium of the stresses thrown by the urbanization and the transitions of the water and soil’s erosion. On the analysis of the evolution of the units’ landscape pattern during the 1970’s and the year of 2003 with their dynamic, the future’s pattern of the unit are doped out to explain the conflict between the urbanization form and matrix context. Restructure to the land space of the units with three sytemes of the human constrution, the human support and the natural maintain, the studies bring forward three supposed modes as the "the ecological predetermined surround model of Mountain Twig Style", "the settlements-ecology stringed beads model of Corridor Valley Style" and " the natural encircled island model of Flatlands Style" to think the harmonious way of the urbanization in this region.
