The fatigue performance at the interface between asphalt pavement layers plays an important role in the road structures performance. A simple procedure of evaluating the shear fatigue performance between pavement layers has been developed in this study. The shear fatigue tests have been conducted on the asphalt-to-asphalt concrete interface in the laboratory. Emulsion asphalt, SBR modified emulsion asphalt and performance-graded asphalt binder are selected as tack coat materials. During testing, the complete shear displacement-load cycles curve is determined. An evaluating index – SD rate (shear displacement rate) which is obtained from the curve using linear regression is put forward to evaluate the shear fatigue properties between asphalt pavement layers. Test results indicate that the index is a steady and reliable evaluating parameter. The study also proves a significant impact of interface condition on the fatigue resistance of pavement layers. The shear fatigue life is improved greatly by using tack coat materials. The asphalt binder has higher fatigue life than the two emulsions. In addition, it is found that the shear fatigue resistance at the interface decreases significantly with an increase in shear stress.
