Abstract:
A series of tests and studies were carried out on the parameters and efects of dynamic compaction (DC) for the deep and
thick collapsible loess foundation under superhigh fll in the Lishi area, Shanxi Province, China. The test results indicate
that a deep collapsible loess foundation can be efectively improved utilizing DC; moreover, loess collapse is signifcantly
eliminated within the improvement range, and the efective improvement depth can be well estimated exploiting the modifed
Menard formula. Additionally, after the energy level of DC exceeds 2000 kN ∙ m, the characteristic value of bearing capacity
of collapsible loess foundations can surpass 300 kPa, and the deformation modulus is beyond 25 MPa. The numerical model
established by ABAQUS is reliable and can provide some guidance on the design and construction of similar engineering
projects.
