Influence of membrane and foulants characteristics on fouling of Ultrafiltration membranes in different pH circumstances

摘要:Membrane fouling is still one of the major obstacles for the execution of ultrafiltration membrane process. In this research, water contact angle (WCA) and zeta potential of membrane surface and foulants were investigated in different pH circumstances. By use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) technology, the surface roughness and membrane surface fouling effects of membrane before and after fouling were analyzed. Meanwhile, taking advantage of relative flux (RF), fouling behavior was evaluated in filtration process. In addition, effects of fouling for three representative ultrafiltration (UF) membranes during filtration of two types of foulants including humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were discussed in different pH circumstances. It was shown that diverse fouling behavior of foulants on varying membrane surfaces was relative to solution pH and hydrophilicity of membrane. As a result, Strong hydrophilic membrane has great antifouling ability. In addition, at the isoelectric point of BSA, the degree of membrane fouling is comparatively gentle. And with the decrease of the pH, membrane fouling degree of HA have an increase. The prediction of XDLVO theory was also in full agreement with the actual filter pollution evaluation and the microstructure observations. The influence of solution pH environment on the micro interaction constitution and their relative volume between pollutants and the membrane interface is revealed, and it is the essential reason which leads to the difference of membrane fouling behavior with the changing pH.
