Abstract:
The process of electrochemical reduction of TiO2 to sponge titanium involves pressure molding the TiO2 powder, sintering the pressed pellets and subjecting the sintered pellets to electrolysis in CaCl2 molten salt, in which cathode preparation is one of the important steps. In this work, the sintering parameters of the pressed pellet such as the sintering temperature and time were investigated. The SEM and EDS methods were applied to study the influences of sintering temperature and time on microstructure and porosity of the TiO2 pellets; moreover, the influences of sintering technological parameters on the microstructure and oxygen content of the electrochemical reduction products were studied. Pellet with coarser grain size was obtained when sintered at higher temperature and for longer time; while the change of the porosity in a pellet was complex under different sintering conditions. The oxygen concentration of the electrochemical-reduced products depended on grain size and porosity of the sintered pellets in this study: pellets with small grains could be fully reduced; both open pores and closed pores in the pellets were favorable to electro-reduction process. The proper electrode preparation condition was sintering the pressed pellet in 1000-1100℃ for 4h according to the results of the experiments.
