Distribution of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in the Shaanxi section of Wei River, Northwest China

The distribution and detection rate of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in the Shaanxi section of Wei River basin, Northwest China, has been systematically investigated by solid phase extraction and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer(GC-MS). The predominant PAEs detected in the studied samples were diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which are listed as priority pollutants by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The results showed that the concentration of the PAEs in the mainstreams were closely related to seasonal changes. In dry, level and wet season, the PAEs concentrations ranged from 1.31 μg/L to 38.02 μg/L, 0.59 μg/L to 19.88 μg/L and 0.40 μg/L to 10.16 μg/L, respectively; and the average concentrations and the detection rate of PAEs were 6.26 μg/L, 4.07 μg/L, 2.01 μg/L, and 100%, 91.5% and 71% respectively. The pollution degree of sample water mainly depended on the pollution source in neighborhood, industries and human production activities. Besides, the mainstreams were also affected by the input of tributaries. And DBP and DEHP were the domestic pollutants in Wei River.
