Characteristics and mechanism of autotrophic nitrogen removal in a single SBR

- A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor treating synthetic NH4+ rich wastewater showing high N losses was examined for microbial and nitrogen conversion characteristics. 80.8 ± 5% of N removal efficiency and highest volume loading of 0.493kg N m–3 d–1 were achieved, while the ratio of nitrate produced to ammonium consumed was only 0.09 (n=60), lower than that in CANON process. In batch tests, the biomass showed good anaerobic and aerobic ammonium-oxidizing activity (10.13 and 6.71 mg NH4+–N g–1 VSS h–1, respectively) but no nitrite-oxidizing activity. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed that aerobic ammonium-oxidizing genus Nitrosomonas dominated the community, and anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were also detected. Nitrogen mass balance and stoichiometry were employed to show that ammonium was mainly removed (71.92%) by coaction of nitritation and Anammox, and 25.84% of N losses were attributed to nitritation-denitrification.
