- Abstract:
- A spinel containing calcium aluminate cement (SCA) is synthesized from light-burned dolomite and industrial alumina (Al2O3) by a sintering process. The phase of the cement constituents are analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure of hydrated cement is examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of some additives (CaCl2, Na2SO4, Li2CO3) on the setting time mainly are investigated in order to improve its setting behaviour. The results show that cement consists of calcium monoaluminate (CaAl2O4, CA), calcium dialuminate (CaAl4O7, CA2) and spinel (MgAl2O4, MA). The main hydrated phase is C2AH8 when water is added. The setting time is shortened by additives. Among these additives, Li2CO3 is most effective. This is mainly attributed to its ability to reduce the time of the hydrate precipitation and to decrease the energy barrier necessary for the formation of calcium aluminate hydrate.
