  • Abstract:

    Bending behavior of timber beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets is researched and analyzed based on the static tests of 8 sawn timber beams, including failure characteristics, ultimate bearing capacity, stiffness, strain of timber section and strain of CFRP sheets at the ends. The unreinforced beams and reinforced beams are of flexural failure when the strain of tension timber fiber reaches the ultimate tension strain, the ultimate loads of reinforced beams are higher than that of unreinforced beams, the strain profile was approximately linear for all load levels, the bond stress between CFRP sheet and timber beam at adjacent end is higher and then decrease gradually as the increase of distance from the end. The tests shows that CFRP sheets have a good strengthening effect for timber beams, and the result can be used to reinforce ancient timber structure buildings with CFRP sheets.
