    自然与建筑环境之间的关系常常被认为是对立的。建筑师们已经认识到有责任保护已经遭受严重破坏和脆弱的生态环境。埃比尼泽 霍华德的《明日的花园城市》展现出他希冀建立的、与环境紧密融合的社会秩序，为建筑师提供了可利用的可持续发展原则。在霍华德花园城市基础上有所更新的可持续花园城市并不是简单地或孤立地追求城市各要素之间的平衡，而是要利用城市规划解决城市生态系统的危机，维持其自身的健康和发展。
