RESIDENTIAL THERMAL ENVIRONMENT AND THERMAL COMFORT IN A RURAL AREA WITH A HOT-ARID CLIMATE: FIELD STUDY DURING THE SUMMER IN TURFAN, CHINA

In the rural areas of Turfan with its hot-arid climate, semi-open spaces and courtyards are the places where most people spent their summer lives in. In order to evaluate and improve the thermal environment conditions for human occupancy in hot-arid climate, a field study was conducted during the summer in 65 traditional vernacular houses in Turfan. A total of 121 subjects provided 206 sets of effective physical data and subjective questionnaires. This paper presents statistical data about the environment conditions of indoor and semi-open spaces in Turfan, together with an analysis of occupant thermal responses. The neutral temperature was assessed at 29.7℃ (either globe temperature or operative temperature) by using linear regression analysis of responses on the ASHRAE-seven-point thermal sensation scales. Thermal acceptability was analyzed using four different methods. The upper limits of the 80% acceptable zones from four assessing methods, respectively, were 33.2, 33.0, 33.8 and 28.1℃ in globe temperature, or 32.4, 32.9, 33.8, and 26.7℃ in operative temperature, respectively.
