- Abstract:The Simulation and Management System on water distribution networks (SMS) is developed to detect pipe bursts in real-time. It is designed by modular programming and is divided into three subsystems of network design, real-time control and data management. The implementation of bursts detection is based on burst characteristic values and similarity analysis. Firstly, the ideal burst characteristic values are calculated based on leakage rate. Then the real value is computed after state estimation. By using the fuzzy similarity ratio of ideal and real values, SMS can find out whether there is a pipe burst in the network. If there is, it will issue warnings. Through the application on an urban water distribution network, which was composed of 55 nodes, 94 pipes and 40 loops, it was proved that SMS was reliable and its detection accuracy was higher than 80%. Therefore, SMS is useful in real-time control of water distribution networks.
