Abstract:
Membrane bioreactors filled with biofilm carriers coexisting with activated sludge named hybrid membrane bioreactors (HMBRs) were investigated for simultaneously removing organic carbon and nitrogen in campus wastewater. Two hybrid membrane bioreactors (HMBR) named HMBR1 and HMBR2 filled with different types of biofilm carriers were compared. This study showed that HMBRs were able to obtain high nutrient removal efficiency already during start-up. COD removal efficiency averaged at 88% and 89%, respectively, for the HMBR1 and HMBR2 during the experimental period, with NH4+-N removal efficiency of 97.46 and 97.45%, respectively. The evolution of the activity of activated sludge predicted by specific oxygen utilization rate (SOUR) in both reactors showed the same trend, decreasing gradually with time from 80 mg/kg.h to 30 mg/kg.h. During the study it came to the summer vacation, so the organic loading rate (OLR) and nitrogen loading rate (NLR) decreased seriously, and the result indicated that low loading rate had a significant effect on sludge supernatant turbidity (ST) and membrane fouling.
