Abstract:
An experimentalstudywasconductedforcharacterizingthewholeoperationalcycleofadynamic membrane bioreactor(DMBR).Withanylonmeshof25 μm poresizeassupportmaterial,the filtration flux wassuddenlyhalvedwithin5min,indicatingarapidcakelayerformation.Thenthe flux declined graduallyandbecamestableat t¼4 h,indicatingthematurationofthedynamicmembrane(DM)for stable operation.Byperiodicalbottomaeration,the flux keptstableuntil t¼24 hbeforephysicalcleaning should beconductedforDMregeneration.Insuchanoperationalcycle,effluent turbidityabout3NTU wasonlydetectedatthestart,droppedtoabout0.5NTUafter5minandkeptlowerafterwards.Effective and stableremovalofchemicaloxygendemand(COD),ammonia,phosphoruswasachievedinthe 2-month continuousoperationperiod.Althoughairbackwashingbroughtabouteffectiverecoveryofthe flux, additionalsurfacebrushingcouldfurtherremovethe “irremovablefouling”. Bymorphologicaland physicochemicalanalysis,itwasidentified thattheDMcouldretain15.3%ofCODand10.6%ofpoly- saccharides fromtheactivatedsludge,aswellascertainamountofprotein-likeandhumic-likesub- stances. ThesemembranefoulingsubstancesshouldberemovedbyphysicalcleaningforDMre- generation.
