Abstract:
The developments in cognitive linguistics have highlighted the importance of conceptual metaphors as a way of thinking in language and language teaching. This paper, in terms of production, surveys Chinese English majors’ competence to use conceptual metaphors in English. It has been shown that: 1) Chinese English majors show a low competence in using conceptual metaphors; 2) the difference in form and meaning between conceptual metaphors in English and Chinese tends to cause some of its misuses; 3) it is practical to adopt conceptual metaphors in ELT.
