Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) blended polyvinylidene fluoride membranes and a systematic insight into its antifouling property

PVDF/EVOH (P/E) blend membranes were prepared via immersion precipitation process for improving the antifouling property of PVDF membrane. In order to get the optimum conditions for preparing P/E membrane, the effects of P/E weight ratio and coagulation bath temperature on the properties of the blend membrane were investigated. Provided an insight into the anti-fouling ability of P/E blend membrane, by comparing the fouling behaviors and membrane-foulant interaction force of P/E blend membrane with those of PVDF membranes. Results shown that the P/E blend membranes appeard to be more hydrophilic, with a higher pure water flux and BSA rejection rate than the PVDF membrane. In addition, the integrated performance of P/E membrane is the best when P/E weight ratio and coagulation bath temperature were fixed at 9/1 and 20℃, respectively. From the antifouling ability analysis, it was found that the flux decline rate and extent of P/E membrane reduced significantly compared to pure PVDF membrane. This phenomenon, in conjunction with the interaction force measurements, demonstrate that the membrane-fouling interaction force was reduced by the addition of EVOH, which could weak the adsorption and accumulation of foulants on the membrane surface or membrane pores and result in a mitigation membrane flux decline rate.
